Once a picturesque fishing village, Albufeira has since the 1960s, expanded into a major holiday resort and is now one of the leading tourist resorts of the Algarve. More and more people are choosing Albufeira as their favourite destination because of its multiple attractions – beautiful golden beaches, lively nightlife, a new marina, varied water sports, golf courses, not to mention the local cuisine. Countless shops, stalls and markets offer typical local handicraft, from hand painted tiles to typical Algarve chimneys.
The beautiful beaches with fine white sand and turquoise blue sea extend both east and west of the town with high sandstone cliffs forming a backdrop. Visitors can enjoy sunbathing during the day and then as the sun sets, the centre of the town begins to change its character. The huge selection of bars, restaurants and clubs start to fill up with people, until they spill out into the narrow streets and the fun continues well into the early hours.
Nightlife on “The Strip”, located near the Montechoro area of Albufeira, is especially popular during the summer with all ages, particularly the younger tourists. Going down “The Strip”, the most popular bars include Linekers, Liberto’s, Cafe Del Mar, Mustang, BJ’s, Reno’s, La Bamba, and Wild & Co. There is also an extremely popular nightclub called Kiss. Alternatively, the well known Kadoc nightclub, is located around 7 miles outside Albufeira.
In order to cope with the growing needs of the tourist industry, Albufeira has expanded into the surrounding countryside where quality accommodation, villas apartments golf properties are being built.
The architecture of Albufeira Old Town ranges from the typically Algarvian narrow streets, with pale white and sometimes tiled houses, to very modern tourist developments. The apartments near the newly built Marina are in unique shades of pinks, blues and yellows, and are dubbed Legoland by the local inhabitants.
Albufeira has very little to do with real Portugal, however people flock here every year and have the time of their lives!
